You may have seen within our newer range of planters, that there are some rather lovely fibre clay pots. They come in a variety of shapes, styles, and colours. But, we are wondering how many of you have heard of fibreclay? Or are aware of the benefits it brings for use in making pots and planters?
What is Fibreclay?
Fibreclay, also written as ‘fibre clay’, is a composite material made from clay and other fibres such as glass, synthetic or natural fibres. This mixture can mimic traditional clay or stone but has extra advantages, such as being lighter weight, durable, and versatile.
What is it Used For?
It is often used for moulding into garden ornaments, display pillars, statues, water features, and of course pots and planters.
Benefits of Fibre Clay Pots
Lightweight
Fibre clay pots are lighter in weight compared to solid stone or traditional clay / ceramics. This means you can move them around far more easily, especially helpful when dealing with larger pots! It also makes them easier to transport and install (as well as display on the shelves).
Durable
The fibres within the material increase the pot’s strength and resistance to cracking and breaking. They are also suitable for outdoor use as they withstand varying weather conditions and are frost-resistant. Making them ideal for placing around the patio or garden.
Versatile
Pots made of fibre clay can be moulded into lots of different shapes and sizes. As you can see from our range there are large and small pots, as well as an assortment of colours.
Aesthetic Designs
Many of our fibre clay pots are hand-finished, which gives a natural variance in the final look. You’ll see that there are a variety of different styles and texture that can be achieved – from weave patterns to smooth finishes, linear designs to wavy textures. It can also simply mimic the appearance of classic materials like clay or stone. Giving a sophisticated and authentic look.
Cleaning & Care
Fibreclay pots are relatively low-maintenance and can be cleaned with just a damp soft cloth to keep them looking their best. Try to avoid anything abrasive in terms of materials or cleaning products. If you choose one of our planters with wooden legs, then they usually come with a waterproof coating to protect and make them suitable for outdoor use.
While the pots can deal with varying weather conditions, it’s advisable to protect them from extremes like a deep freeze.
So, Are They Any Good?
Well, we think so! While the material is fairly new compared to some of the more well known materials like terracotta or plastic pots, it’s certainly seems like a happy medium between the two. Mimicking traditional and often expensive materials, while being affordable, lighter weight and fabulously versatile for design, fibre clay has certainly got our attention!
