The traditional way that items of furniture are crafted is that the spokes of reed are soaked so that they become pliable. Once pliable, they are then woven to make the intricate patterns that we know and love in stylish wicker furniture.
With modern wicker furniture construction, the material used is unlikely to need the soaking method.
