The Return of Colour: Decorating for Spring at Easter

You would be forgiven for not knowing off the top of your head when exactly Easter is being celebrated each year. Occurring in either March or April, the actual timing is determined by a particular ecclesiastical calculation called computus.

The timing of Easter also coincides with spring in the Northern Hemisphere and has possible links to pagan feasts for Ēostre, the Old English name for the Goddess of Dawn, who is thought to have been celebrated in the month of April.

The themes and rituals that run throughout Easter are intrinsically linked to springtime, whether it’s the messages of resurrection, sunrise services, or traditions such as Flowering the Cross.

Emerging from a long dark winter it’s understandable that people, whether they celebrate Easter or not, would wish to mark the turning of the season, in anticipation for the lighter days, warmer weather and the growth associated with both.

Decorating ideas

Decorating for spring at Easter isn’t just about tradition, but about bringing spring indoors with its appealing light, colour and optimism. Springtime can be jam packed full of colour, so there is a lot to choose from when deciding which aspects to bring into your home, whether you prefer something soft and understated, or bright and playful.

Yellows

Soft yellows are perhaps the most obvious way to inject spring into your home. It’s reminiscent of the return of sunlight after winter, the longer days, and along with green, one of the colours we think of when we think of new life. It is after all the colour of spring staples, chicks and daffodils.

Bringing yellow into your home can be as easy as incorporating small decorative chicks, adding yellow soft furnishings like throws and cushions, or blooms of yellow flowers, whether real, artificial or wooden. When used in moderation, yellow accents are a great way to brighten up an interior whilst keeping things light and airy.

Neutrals

For a more classic Easter look, neutrals and pastels offer a calming, timeless aesthetic. Soft eggshell tones, delicate pinks, muted greens, and powder blues are just a taste of the possibilities. A centrepiece of natural or lightly coloured eggs can make an effortless focal point, whilst plush bunnies and sheep, natural woods and gingham fabrics can add depth and charm.

Rattan baskets, faux fur throws and spring flowers are just some of the other areas you can incorporate to result in an overall effect that is relaxed, cosy and quietly elegant.

Vibrant

If you’re drawn to something more energetic, vibrant colours offer a joyful, modern twist to Easter decorating. Going the vibrant route is a chance to embrace your sense of fun and creativity.

Traditional Easter decorations such as rabbits, eggs and flowers, but coloured vibrantly, can be used to achieve this maximalist look. Abstract designs become eye-catching features, while bright, mixed bouquets of spring flowers bring life to any corner. It’s less about coordination and more about expression, capturing the excitement and abundance of the season in full bloom.
