How to Decorate a Christmas Tree to Look Full

dusk theme christmas tree decorate to look full with gold and dark blue

No one wants their Christmas tree to look disappointing after all the effort that goes into putting it up. Seeing gaps in the decorations or areas that look lacking, isn’t ideal if you want that luxuriously full look. Our team of fabulous designers create a whole range of stunning festive displays in our store each year. Here, we share some of their top tips for how to decorate a Christmas tree to look full and beautiful. Plus, a few extra tips too!

Add Artificial Foliage Picks

One of our favourite ways to decorate a Christmas tree to look full and rich is to add artificial foliage sprays and picks. A mixture of different faux foliage will give your Christmas tree a bushy look. There are lots of different types, colours, and styles of faux foliage, so you’ll be able to find the right selection to work with your theme or look for the season. Add the sprays or picks to your tree by inserting them between the branches and spreading them evenly throughout your decorations.

Try gently frosted faux eucalyptus or lamb’s ear for a natural fresh look, or variegated holly and ivy for a traditional touch. Go metallic with gold, silver, or rose gold faux fern sprays for luxury, or try artificial leaves in warm colours for a woodland look.

Try Faux Berries

Layering artificial berries with your foliage is a great way to decorate a Christmas tree to look full and abundant. Berries provide extra texture, colour, and richness to the tree. Here you can see our Barolo wine theme which uses natural looking red artificial berries to compliment the classic green branches. While our Ski Lodge theme uses blue and white faux berries for a fuller display with a cool and contemporary look.

Use Artificial Flowers

We love florals here at Inspirations. So, why not use them in your Christmas tree! Of course we have the festive favourite – the poinsettia. You can read our poinsettias Q&A blog post here. You don’t have to stick to the classics though. Adding roses, peonies, hydrangeas, and other wonderful blooms will make the Christmas tree look more filled out. Many of these festive florals are clip on decorations, which makes it super easy to attach to more awkward branches. While the long stems on other artificial flowers can be inserted between branches to cover the gaps.

Have a Go With Deco Mesh

The wonders of Deco Mesh! It’s a fabulous material to have to hand when decorating and it works for many different occasions or events. It’s also ideal when you want to decorate a Christmas tree to look full and eye catching! The weatherproof Deco Mesh comes in lost of colours and is brilliantly versatile. Shape and weave it in and out of the branches on your tree to ‘pack out’ the look without needing too many decorations. Plus, it’s a really affordable way to create volume and impact.

Got excess Deco Mesh left after decorating your Christmas tree? Perfect! Use what’s left to create or enhance wreaths or garlands, make door bows or even finish gifts with.

Fill Gaps With Ribbons & Bows

A lovely classic touch when trying to make a Christmas tree look fuller is to use ribbon and bows. There are so many different colours, patterns, and styles that you’ll find something to match any festive theme or colour scheme.

Layer your tree with decorative ribbons, which will elevate your trees aesthetic. Try looping them in groups of three to create volume. Some ribbon is available with wire edges, which means they will hold their shape once positioned. Use one or two styles of ribbon, of different textures and sizes to create even more of an impact.

Adding bows doesn’t have to be a fiddley job of trying to tie them to the branches either. The ready made bows are quick and easy additional touch for an elegant, cute, or nostalgic look.

Organise Your Baubles

Another great tip from our design team is to hang larger baubles closer to the centre of the tree (the trunk) to give it more depth and hang the smaller baubles towards the end of the branches. The larger size of bauble fills more space higher up the branches and the smaller ones don’t weigh down the tips.

To elevate your look use a clustering technique to add 3 of the same baubles as a cluster and space these around the tree. The gathering of similar baubles catches the eye.

Top and Tail

Finishing touches such as a Christmas tree skirt are a neat and tidy way to hide the framework of artificial tree legs or the base of a real one. You can pick a range of styles and colours to work with your chosen theme or look.

Tree toppers are another way to finish decorating your Christmas tree to look full. A tree missing something at the top could look a little incomplete. However, if you aren’t a fan of a classic star or angel, try our alternative topper idea of using faux foliage gathered at the peak for something a bit different.
