How Do Citronella Candles Work?

The summer time is a brilliant time when things brighten up and it starts to get warmer outdoors. It is the perfect time for outdoor dining and just chilling out in the garden with your household. But one problem that might arise when you are eating outdoors in the evening is the presence of midges and mosquitoes. All hope is not lost, however, as this is just where citronella candles come into play to save the day!

What Exactly is Citronella?

Citronella is a naturally occurring oil which is a repellent to insects. It is made by distilling different types of Cymbopogon (lemongrass) leaves and stems. It therefore has a lemongrass-based odor when you burn it in candles. This is lovely for the ambience of an outdoor space. But, crucially, it also masks the kind of scents that would normally attract bugs such as mosquitoes or midges. This means that you will be able to enjoy your outdoor dining without being pestered so much by those unwelcome intruders.

Benefits of Citronella

One of the big benefits of citronella oil is that it is a non-toxic method of repelling insects. Meaning that it is safer than many of the alternatives. You may be able to get certain synthetic sprays, which work more effectively than the citronella candles. However, you could find that these sprays may be toxic and so potentially harmful or irritating to humans if they linger in the air that people will be breathing in. Citronella candles, on the other hand, will be a pleasant presence in the air whilst they are doing their job of repelling insects.

How Many Citronella Candles Do You Need?

It is said that two 2 inch candles will tend to cover a space of up to 6 feet. This means that a two or three candles will generally cover a medium sized outdoor table. However, you will want to opt for more if you are having a big event with a larger dining space. With that said, you will also need to take into account whether the air is still or not, as a more gusty day will mean that you will need to increase the amount of candles that you should use.

Keep in Mind Air Movement

When you are using citronella candles, you will need to be mindful that they will not have a strong effect on bugs if you only have one or two in an open area. Especially if it happens to be windy. They operate by repelling insects through the odor that the oil produces. This odour will not be so prominent in the air if the wind is refreshing the air continuously. They work best in areas that have limited air movement. This means that they will be great on still days. Or, if it is a gusty day, then they will be most effective if your seating area is secluded from the wind and the candles are set up in that area too.

Can You Burn Citronella Candles Indoors?

It is generally recommended that you do not use citronella candles indoors for a few reasons. Although the scent is very pleasant for you as the candles burn, you may find that these oils work their way into interior fabrics. Also, the citronella candles tend to have a slight more smokey burn than ordinary candles. This is great as another repellent for insects who don’t like the smoke, but perhaps not so great for using indoors. So, for cleaner conditions inside, it is best only to use them outdoors.
