The Tradition of Christmas Glass Baubles

Tinsel, lights, and a variety of other bright and cheerful elements can be added, but no tree would be complete without the wonderful Christmas tree baubles that we all love so much. Originally Christmas trees were decorated with apples, candy canes and pastries. Many families then started to fashion home-made decorations to brighten their displays. The glass baubles that are now such an important element of tree decorating didn't appear until late in the 16th century and there is evidence to suggest that they were an accidental invention.

Hans Greiner and Christoph Muller founded a glass factory in Lauscha, Germany which fashioned a variety of glass pieces that were hand blown. At the end of each day the thirsty artisans would take a drink and under the influence of alcohol played games to see who could blow the biggest bubble of glass without it shattering. The resulting balls were taken by the wives, silvered and sold at the Christmas markets. These and the factory's strings of glass beads proved to be incredibly popular amongst those who could afford them.

In the 19th century the arrival of gas made blowing glass much easier and it became possible to produce much thinner pieces. The baubles were more practical and affordable and their popularity began spreading across the world. In the latter part of the century mass production began and the world of Christmas decorations has never looked back.
